Description

Despite growing up in the same household and being only one year apart in age, Sienna and Azure often find themselves at odds. To Sienna, Azure’s carefree nature seems selfish, while Azure views Sienna’s pragmatism as snobbery. Because of this, both girls accumulate feelings of distrust and bitterness, which may make a true reconciliation impossible, unless unforeseen circumstances intervene.

This is a beautiful, nuanced, heartfelt comic about growing up and taking different paths. The story is wonderfully paced and unfolds at a luxurious, comfortable speed. The art looks to be done in a faux chalk pastel style that gives it a soft, inviting aesthetic. Along with the choice of color pallet, the art is rendered in a fun, emotive style that makes you smile when the moment is right, and tear up when the mood falls. The Citric Arc is the best comic I’ve read in a long long time.

The Citric Arc is beautiful – artistically and emotionally. I have yet to read another comic that made me feel as much as this one. JWC’s use of styles and colors is intentional and evocative, and tells a very full and deep story with only brief moments. I identified with and bonded with these characters in no time at all and was completely engaged in their stories. I especially loved the thematic photobooth-like pieces between each chapter. From structure to style to character development, The Citric Arc has it all, 1000%.

A beautifully illustrated slice-of-life story about two very different sisters growing up and growing apart. Siblings are the people most alike and yet often the most conflicted. Through that conflict, can love remain?

The artwork adapts to each of the chapters, either going softer and a little more hazy or more defined and sharper. The color choices are beautiful, helping us identify each sister.

But it’s the characters who are the most well defined and interesting part of this book. It’s hard not to feel for each of them, even as you see how their personalities conflict.

My only complaint is that it ended too abruptly and I wanted more! But that’s the sign that you’ve just read a very good book.
