With Johnny Bullet #1 we get tone, style and atmosphere… and muscle cars. What’s being baked here is a cool-guy/tough-guy exterior with a noble and youthful heart surrounded by adventures, jealousy and a host of fast women, slick money men and bad guys predominantly set in and around American muscle cars.
What’s not set in stone yet is the story. #1 switches times and locations multiple times as we see the backstory of our protagonist from a young man saving a bus load of passengers from bad guys to being a full fledged action movie stunt driver flying off the President’s faces of Mt. Rushmore and getting into a car crash.
Despite the jumping through time and place, JB1 has a vintage endearment and ease of readability that keeps the pages turning quickly. That must is immediately obvious from the well done art but it’s also echoing from the characters… those of a less complex time. The men are men (good or bad) and the women are (I’m assuming from quoted dialogue) “Bad Girls”.
We’ll see how the story solidifies as it becomes linear in future issues.
