From Justin Sunseri (that’s me), a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist – Astr0 Pi6 is for middle schoolers and their families. Beautiful artwork and an imaginative story combined with social and emotional skill regulation tucked in.

Astr0 lands on various planets and catalogues everything he can into his trusty Recorder. On this particular planet, he befriends (awkwardly) a teddy bear/monkey creature, who then leads Astr0 to his village. Once there, Astr0 discovers the giant problem the cute little creatures face…

Kids and their families will learn how to rate feelings, which can help to look at inner bodily experiences more objectively – a mindfulness skill. They will also learn a deep breathing technique to help calm down. The book is intended for middle-graders with vocabulary that is a bit more challenging to the reader (and putting parents on the spot!). My daughter (9) absolutely loved the book and wanted more. Parents can also make up their own words while younger kids look at the highly imaginative and colorful pictures, just as I do with my toddler son (3).

Something you can share with your family. Not something that can be said a lot of comics that I read these days nor that I create. however here is something with a bit of something for everyone.

First of all my wife was interested in words that came out of my mouth when I mentioned comic or illustrated book, which is surprising considered how much I numb her with all my hair brained comic schemes.

Her first call was the colors. I really like the colours and style, and so she should. The colours are vibrant and invite you to look around the page.
Then it was, I like those jelly bean creatures and what is that monkey doing wearing a cape, and so she should. This story is about putting an adventure on a page.
Then there was my Mr 5 (my littlest guy didn’t quite get it), who liked all the big scary (not so scary at all really) creatures that existed in the world.

To go on from that would give too much away but as any kids story should consider it also provides a lesson without feeling forced. This is the sort of story you share with your family. Damn I want to print it and send it to my local school.
